Remote desktop control and always-on-top view with the new Jitsi Meet desktop app

We recently blogged bout Google Summer of Code 2018 and the 3 projects which finished successfully. Today we are going to talk about one of those projects: Jitsi Meet Electron, or the Jitsi Meet desktop app, as we release version 1.0.0.

The project had existed for a (long) while, but it was really basic. Just a shell over the meet.jit.si website, and a playground for our Electron SDK. Thanks to GSoC and our student Akshit Nagpal, we took the project to the next level and converted it to a proper app we can be prod of and share with the world.

What does this give me over the web version? I hear you say. Great question, here are its main features, some of which cannot really be implemented in the web:

  • Works with any Jitsi Meet deployment
  • Local settings
  • Builtin auto-updates
  • Remote control
  • Always-On-Top window

We provide self-updating binaries for Windows, GNU/Linux and macOS, head over here for downloading the latest release!

Last, but most certainly not least, we’d like to thank Google for having us as a Summer of Code organization and Akshit for his fantastic work over the summer. ❤️
